I prioritize Embassy Row and Georgetown during the daylight hours and go directly to the Tidal Basin to experience the monuments illuminated beautifully against the night sky right after the 6:21 PM sunset.
Neighborhoods & Tidal Basin Itinerary
- 09:00 AM – 10:30 AM: Washington National Cathedral
- Activity: Marvel at the world's sixth-largest cathedral, explore the soaring neo-Gothic nave, view the famous Space Window (containing a piece of moon rock), and stroll through the serene Bishop's Garden.
- Transit Arrival: Take a ride share or metro to the Washington National Cathedral (3101 Wisconsin Ave NW).
- 10:30 AM – 12:30 PM: Downhill Stroll Through Embassy Row
- Transit to Start: Walk 10 minutes southeast down Massachusetts Ave NW to reach the British Embassy area, where the primary embassy cluster begins. Listen to an audio tour. Originally called Millionaires' Row, it was mansions and large homes built by the newly wealthy. Today, the section of Massachusetts Ave NW north of Dupont Circle is the home to many of the embassies in Washington, DC. Who else but an embassy needed a 60 room house with a grand ballroom?
This tour will explore the neighborhood's history and outside of embassies along the way, finishing up near the North entrance to the Dupont Circle Metro Station on the red line. - Activity: Walk downhill along Massachusetts Avenue to admire the historic architecture, grand mansions, and international flags representing the world's diplomatic corps.

- 12:30 PM – 04:30 PM: Georgetown Exploration & Late Lunch
- Transit: From the bottom of Embassy Row (near Dupont Circle), take a westbound DC bus straight into Georgetown. Discover the most romantic, cozy, and calm part of Washington D.C. Brick houses, antique shops, restaurants and cafes; Georgetown does not even look like an American city! Visit Blues Alley, home to one of the most famous Washington, D.C. jazz-clubs. Learn about why there is no metro connection in Georgetown. Get to know the love story of John F. Kennedy and his wife Jacqueline. Find out how Georgetown city became a district of Washington, D.C. Feel inspired by the charming and relaxing atmosphere of the area.
- Activity: Grab a late lunch on bustling M Street or along the historic C&O Canal. Spend your afternoon browsing the boutique shops and relaxing at the scenic Georgetown Waterfront Park.
- 04:30 PM – 05:45 PM: Late Afternoon Rest & Freshen Up
- Activity: Sit at a waterfront café or head back to your lodging. Be sure to grab a warm jacket or layers, as October temperatures drop rapidly by the water after dark.
- 05:45 PM – 06:30 PM: Sunset Arrival at the Tidal Basin
- Transit: Take a 10-minute ride share from Georgetown to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial entrance.
- Activity: Arrive as the golden hour peaks and find a spot along the shoreline to watch the 6:21 PM sunset reflect across the water.
- 06:30 PM – 08:30 PM: Night Monument Walking Tour
- Activity: Complete the 2-mile paved walking loop around the Tidal Basin. Enjoy the crowd-free, brightly illuminated white marble structures of the MLK Jr. Memorial, the stone rooms of the FDR Memorial, and the towering pillars of the Jefferson Memorial.
- 08:30 PM onward: Dinner at The Wharf
- Transit: Take a quick 5-minute ride share across the channel to The Wharf neighborhood for a warm indoor dinner by the marina to celebrate the end of a fantastic day.
